BSAC NEWS OCTOBER 1999 Volume 17 Number 10 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEWS IN THIS ISSUE: President's Message Last Meeting's Minutes Treasurer's Report 1958 Edsel Pacer Model Car Review Neat Websites Classifieds Coming Events and the rest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Hello BSAC, Honesty first; this is being written at the last moment so my usual rambling is being cut short due to a deadline. October 10th is coming. A date us Central Ohio modelers should be thankful for. Why? October 10th is the Toledo Toy Show and the October 9th NNL that accompanies the toy show. This is a great time to share ideas with others, see what others are building, and pick up good resin pieces and cheap models for future projects. Even those of us that don't have much time for building, still enjoy seeing what's new that's available for modeling. Why is this so important to us? Those of you who attended the September Columbus Toy Show at the Aladdin, know what I'm talking about. There were only two dealer tables there that specialized in models of any kind! (Thank goodness they were two car model dealers). The toy show in Columbus is really shrinking in size and quality of dealers. I'm interested in going to the Toledo show to see if the back room is closed off due to a lack of dealers or if the toy show business is just slowing down in Columbus. Perhaps the 1990's were the "golden era" of toy shows. We'll see. Thank goodness for Toledo, or we wouldn't have anything good around here close! Today, October 3rd., I was at Toys R Us on Morse Rd. and they had AMT sets of three or four models for $9.99! I don't want to hear of any fighting over these kits at this weeks meeting. (Leave the fighting for the Hot Wheels junkies!). See you this week at the meeting. Public service vehicles are the featured models this month. Bring them in with lights flashing! Your President, Dave Clutter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAST MEETING'S MINUTES By Bob Mako Dave Clutter started the meeting at the usual time. Gary Omen followed with the treasurer's report and also thanked the members for the support extended to him and his family during their recent troubles. Gary, club librarian, also showed a book entitled, "Glory Days" that he recently purchased. It is about the "glory days" of the muscle car era and the Pontiac GTO specifically. Gary is willing to loan the book out, as he is with all his books, and promptly did so to another club member. Dave mentioned that he had a flyer for the Y-City Scale Modelers annual model contest to be held in conjunction with the Brighten Historical Assn. Oktoberfest, in Zanesville, the weekend of October 3rd (whew!). Deke wasn't there to give his usual plug for the event. Carl Rees gave a status report on the 2000 Goodguys. According to our contact Jake, the Goodguys would like to sponsor a NNL event in Columbus the weekend of the show. Preliminary plans have the BSAC selling tickets, for a percentage of the proceeds, for the event to be held at the Fairgrounds. The ticket would be a good for the 3-day show. Goodguys will sponsor all expenses. Carl was going to try to nail down the details in order to have a flyer ready to take to the Toy Show in Toledo in October. Gary also gave everyone a tip on how to make the dirt track tires that he had on his Buick. He heated a file and then rolled a set of slicks over the file. The pattern of the file was transferred into the plastic of the slick. The tires looked great on the car. Gary never ceases to amaze me with all he is able to accomplish! And that, as they say, is all folks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONGRATULATIONS The Theme winner was Gary Omen with his modified Buick racer. The Miscellaneous theme winner was who with what? Please let me know at the meeting; so you can get your deserved recognition in the next newsletter. Who won the 50/50 raffle? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY Happy Birthday wishes go to Rick Schneider who celebrates on October 23rd. Have a great day! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OFFICERS FOR 1999 President: Dave Clutter President-Elect: Frank Belcastro Treasurer: Gary Omen Secretary-Editor: Tom Dillion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THEMES FOR 1999 October - Public Service Vehicles November - Same Kit Night - Election of Officers - Selection of Themes for 2000 (Y2K) December - Christmas Party - Vote for Model of the Year - Recognition of Modeler of the Year ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MODEL CAR REVIEW By Gary Omen AMT / ERTL 1958 Edsel Pacer Kit #30032 $11.00 (Hobbyland) 1/25th Scale Back in 1959, I was in the first grade. Midway through the school year, we had to pick up and move to Albuquerque, New Mexico where my father had been assigned to a location called "Sandia Base". Having spent most of my young life in places like Fort Knox, Kentucky (where I was born), Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and here in Columbus. A move like this was as far as I had gone yet and quite an adventure. I remember thinking that everything was so new there! New sights (deserts and mountains just outside my door), new cars (we traded our '54 Olds in on a new Pontiac), and for the first time in our lives as a military family, we moved into brand new quarters! We even got to pick our lot! It was the dawn of the '60's and to a young kid, everything was new. After we had been there awhile, the neighborhood was soon filled up and each house's driveway had some great looking new car parked in it. Newer and fancier ones were coming out all the time. It was a great time to be a car nut. As in neighborhood with kids, certain "Things" got to be big (like Beanie Babies today). For a while, there at Sandia Base, the "Thing" was to race certain AMT or JoHan models down driveways like soapbox derby racers. We just raced the stock models with no modifications other than 3-in-1 oil and hope. When the '60 versions came out with their thinner wire axles, they really cleaned up. All except for one kid who had an AMT '58 Edsel that consistently won. There were no rules, just the satisfaction of winning or the shame of losing. Still, for a kid during a long New Mexico summer, it was great fun. Some kids tried to race the new trophy kits like the '32 Roadster and Coupe or the '40 Ford; but they were too light compared to those thick plastic frames and bodies on the old 3-in-1 kits. They got smoked every time. Even though all the driveways in the development had the same slope and size (the Army prides itself on uniformity), certain driveways got a reputation, as being fast and mine was one of them. Actually, the driveway was a little shorter which made a race end early. For myself, I had an AMT '58 Impala that I thought was good because it had such a heavy body. I didn't try to paint it because, for one, I didn't paint yet, and for two, it would just get scratched up anyway because you could always count on a crash or two. By the end of the racing season, my poor Impala looked like a bar of soap from all the "sanding" done by the rough concrete driveway. Anyway, back to the '58 Edsel. This kid's was black with red trim and really stood out from the other unpainted cars. We never did figure out the secret of his consistent wins; but in looking back, I think he might have either polished those giant AMT axles or opened up the holes in the chassis. Whatever he did, he ran straight and true and hardly ever wrecked. This long introduction is because I always wanted to have an AMT '58 Edsel after that summer and never got one. I did get a '59 Craftsman kit (it was molded in green); but it just didn't have the style of that '58. When I finally had the chance to buy one, the market for the early 3-in-1 kits was through the roof; so I had to wait for a re-issue or a new kit. Make no mistake about it; this is not a re-issue. All it shares with that earlier Edsel is the name and the body style. It is probably the most complete and comprehensive AMT kit I have seen since the new 1957 Chevy. How about separate inserts for all the bumper guards and separate hubcap spinners (so you can match the two-tone paint with the body!) I'm not going to try to do a complete review at this time because I've already gone on a bit already and Tom is going to have to type all of this and for that, I apologize. I also have so much on the bench right now that I don't want or need to start another kit. I'm just going to put this little beauty away until the right inspiration hits me. AMT / ERTL has taken a clue from Lindbergh and "MonoRell" (Nice, Huh?) and improved their packaging a lot. The body is sealed in its own bag and a close look shows no flaws. Here's a bonus tip: after painting, the best way to pick out the EDSEL lettering on the rear quarter panel is to use a silver colored pencil available at art supply stores. It's much neater than a brush and any mistakes can be scrubbed away with an art gum eraser. Then seal it with Glosscote. Try it! It works! AMT's new instruction format is great, too. Each part is identified. Each part is identified by name along with its' respective color call-outs. To top all of that, each and every color combination, available in 1958, is listed on a large table along with interior accents, like the cushion welting and buttons. I've never seen such a list before. This is a "stock only model" with no trim accessories. It's just a loaded stocker. Everything except the body side molding and some minor trim is offered as a separate part (on a separate chrome tree) and the engine compartment even has heater hoses as individual parts, which is a pleasant surprise. The tires have snap-on white walls and the tread and sidewall detail on the B. F. Goodrich Silvertowns is so good that you actually need a magnifying glass to see it! With over 130 parts, this is truly a kit worth waiting for! It is one that modeler's have waited for a long time. It's well worth the price of admission; and trust me, I've only hit some of the high points. There is a lot more in here and this could be this year's 1953 Ford Victoria. It is a real honey; but I'll bet it doesn't run for beans down the driveway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEAT WEBSITES... Silicon Valley Scale Vehicles Model Car Club http://www.zoomie.com/nnl.html This is a very interesting website which has many features such as their Club Profile, a Picture Gallery of model car events, Free Classifieds where anyone can place model car or real car advertisements, their meeting Schedule, Links to other websites, model car Articles and Mini Bios on club members. This club was formed in 1991. Their membership has steadily grown over the years to about 20 members who attend regularly. The philosophy of their club is "NO dues, NO fees, just get together to talk about models". Most of their members support other activities in model building outside of the club, so the club is our forum to relax and talk about models. Occasionally, the hat gets passed around to collect for sponsorships, postage, etc... Their club member's interests in model building span the whole range of Formula one, drag, stock, curbside... you name it. They even have writers, die cast collectors and closet Military builders. They staff the Western N.N.L., WCME and Gold Coast National Challenge. Also of interest, is a photograph I happened to find in their coverage of the 1998 NNL Western Nationals Model Car Show held February 21, 1998 in Santa Clara, California. It is a photo of a '37 Ford 1 1/21/2-Ton Truck built by one of our infamous members, Carl Rees. Congrats... Check it out... (Now listed on the BSAC Favorite Links webpage). Zoomie's Workshop Just for the fun of it... http://www.zoomie.com/ This website features coverage's of many real street rod events from the west coast, articles about street rods, book reviews, free classifieds ads, host of the website of the Silicon Valley Scale Vehicles Model Car Club website and the Bay City Racing Association, gift shop and editorial archives. Check it out... (Now listed on the BSAC Favorite Links webpage). Police Car Web Site http://www.op.net/~rwcar4/police.htm In keeping with this month's theme of Public Service Vehicles, I did a web search and found this unique website. Some of the webpages are somewhat slow in loading because of the file sizes of the photographs; but the website features many varied police vehicles from many areas of the United States (such as Columbus, Ohio and the world.
