BSAC NEWS NOVEMBER 1999 Volume 17 Number 11 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEWS IN THIS ISSUE: President's Message Last Meeting's Minutes Treasurer's Report Are We Better, More Sophisticated or What? Neat Websites Classifieds Coming Events and the rest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Hello to all, I have tried this year to cater my messages to the modeling hobby in general. This month I'm going to talk a bit about my kids, along with modeling stuff. On a recent trip to a hobby store, I noticed all of the new or newer kits of Formula 1 kits now available. Tamiya's McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 is a beautiful example. I also noticed that Tamiya is re-releasing some prototype racers from a few years back. These kits are great kits of sports cars that I really like. I've got a special interest in the F-1 stuff, because... My older son, who is 14 years old, and I follow the F-1 scene fairly close. We recently sent our application in for the September 24, 2000 Indianapolis F-1 race. We're excited! With Daimler-Chrysler buying 45% of McLaren, Ford buying Ford Stewart, and Honda getting back into F-1 with BAR, the 2000 season looks to be interesting. The trip will be fun! My 12 year old son and I have had fun this summer with the VW Bug and Revell NASCAR snap kits available this year. Those NASCAR snap kits are great quick fun. Remember seeing Sean's build up at a recent meeting? Pretty cool! There was some talk at the last meeting of the new modeling magazine, Model Cars. After looking at one, I recommend to all to give this magazine a look. Same kit night and the Christmas meeting at Gary's house round out the meetings for this year. Both are great fun, so come on out and enjoy. Also, BSAC is always looking for articles for the newsletter. Feel free to submit what you can. Being President, I feel it necessary to make a promise to my constituents this time of the year. My promise to you, my fellow BSAC'ers, is the return of the 50/50 drawing at the November meeting. Your President, Dave Clutter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAST MEETING’S MINUTES Dave Clutter started the meeting at the normal time. The November Theme is Same Kit Night (SKN). There’s a twist to exciting event: the SKN kits this year will be any previous SKN kits you didn’t build. Following is the list of the previous SKN kits: 1984 - MPC - Chevrolet Cavalier 1985 - AMT/ERTL - 1958 Chevrolet Impala 1986 - IMC - 1948 Ford Coupe 1987 - Monogram - Monte Carlo 1988 - Monogram - 1937 Ford 1989 - AMT/ERTL - 1966 Chevrolet Nova 1990 - AMT/ERTL - 1955 Chevrolet Belair 1991 - Revell - 1967 Chevelle 1992 - AMT/ERTL - Ford Courier Pickup 1993 - AMT/ERTL - Kodak NASCAR Oldsmobile 1994 - AMT/ERTL - 1995 Camaro Z-28 1995 - AMT/ERTL - 1950 Chevy Pickup (Snapfast) 1996 - Revell - Boss Mustang (Snaptite) 1997 - AMT - 1953 Corvette (Snap) 1998 - Lindberg - 1953 Ford Gary read his Treasurer’s report. Then he announced that he would like to again run for the position of Treasurer. Then we heard that familiar ole train come rumbling through as the nomination was made, seconded and again was unanimous that he is the club Treasurer. That ole train was a long one because he was also elected to be our Millennium El Presidente. Bob Mako will be the Secretary / Newsletter Editor for the year 2000. (thank you, thank you, thank you...) Uncle Bill displayed his 1953 Ford mild custom project. Goodguys flyers are ready for next summer’s big event on July 7, 8 and 9, 2000 (see flyer elsewhere in this issue). The contest will move to the larger Bricker building with mucho more traffic and possibly more contest entries. Several Members voiced at the last meeting that they were unable to get to our club website. I sent e-mail including the address of the website, but only received a small response to the e-mail. So, here is the address of the website: http://members.dencity.com/bsac/index.html Please let me know at the meeting if you are able or unable to get to the website. Thanks... By Gary Omen At our last meeting I had a chance to take home three model car magazines from the sixties. They were a lot of fun to look at and were brought back after a lot of fine memories. They also raised some questions... The magazines were representative of what was available back then. The magazines were two issues of Model Car Science and one issue of Car Model. I can even remember having them as a kid. What struck me, as I got a chance to look back (so to speak), was how amateurish a lot of the stuff looks to me now. It looked so good back then! Some of the kits that were featured looked bad that they wouldn’t looked so bad that they wouldn’t be out of place on a junior table of today. Maybe, I’m looking back on all of this with the eyes or wisdom born of experience. I know that there were a lot of builders doing great things with model cars thirty some years ago like Augie Hiscano, Bob Paeth and Don Emmons (some of them this are!). Still, one of the magazines had a dragster on its cover (really a slot car) that not only looked bad, It would have been a threat to human life, if it ever ran in 1:1 scale! I have written before about the "Continuity Factor" of model car building. By this I mean that a lot of things about our hobby have remained constant over the years, which is part of its appeal to us. If you wanted, today you could go to your local hobby shop and get a kit that would be much the same as it was "back when" only just re-released in a new box. You could also go to the paint rack and find the same colors that you could have found in 1963. With all of that, you could get the chance to try again with the model you wanted to build as a kid, but screwed up. Today, we have a gigantic aftermarket, which barely existed back then. And, kits with sophistication that could only have been dreamed of in those days. Could it be that this has made us a little cynical? I think that maybe it has. I look at the model contest pictures in these old magazines and think: "Just what the heck was this person trying to do with this thing? It’s a piece of junk!" However, back then it was good enough to win a national contest. Our playing field has changed guys. It’s not just us, everything has gotten better: kits, parts, paint and us. How good were you in 1963 compared to how good you are now? It’s easy to look at these early efforts of other builders (who were good in their time) and feel superior. We’re all "Back to the Future" So, when you look at an old model car magazine and have a little chuckle about whatever weird monstrosity you’re looking at, stop and think that maybe the guy who built it back then is looking back and laughing too! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEAT WEBSITES...
