BSAC NEWS January 2002 Volume 20, Number 1 ************************************************* IN THIS ISSUE President's Message Last Meeting's Minutes Editor's Comments Monthly Themes Modelers Profile ************************************************* PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE From the Desk Of the President, (Why are all the drawers glued shut?) First, I would like to say thank you to the people who chose, er, I mean, elected me into office. (You know who you are!). It is an honor and a privilege to be president of the Buckeye Scale Auto Club. I hope that I can lead the club with the same enthusiasm and energy that past presidents have. Second, I would like to emphasize something about the club itself. Each club member is unique. This uniqueness is the very fabric that holds this club together. Without the individuality that each of us possesses, this club would never exist. This is best shown on Same Kit Night. To see 15 to 20 DIFFERENT renditions of the same kit is exciting and rewarding at the same time. Third, I want to thank the Omen household for an outstanding Christmas party. The food was great, the atmosphere was wonderful, and the company was excellent. Let's not forget about that meat and cheese tray! I would also like to say congratulations to Dave Clutter for winning the Model of the Year with his 1970 Mustang Mach I. Congratulations to myself (I guess) for winning Modeler of the Year. I would like to also point out an observation I have made recently. Has anyone else noticed that the Wal-Mart model kit selection has both decreased in quantity AND gone up in price? This actually holds true at a lot of the department stores here in town. Toys-R-Us, once the 'king' of model kits, has reduced its kit count to 5; three 'dancing' lowriders and two diecast kits. And I think I know why it is happening. There are some select few people out there that build models, but they don't know squat about economics. These people are the ones that will open a model kit to steal the wheels and tires out of it for that 'special' project they are building. This is why department stores are no longer carrying model kits; they can't afford to sell 'missing' parts. It is also why model kit manufacturers raise the prices of kits. I recently counted SEVEN open kits at Meijer, all of which were missing wheels and tires; one was also missing the body and the glass! I find this to be a disturbing epidemic all around town. Now on to something positive. I was at Hobbyland on Sawmill road a few days ago. My Same Kit Night Edsel is in their display case, along with the Edsel I built for 'comparison purposes'. While I was looking through the model kits, two young guys (younger than me) went up to the display case. One of them said " Dude, Check it out!" The one guy starts talking to his buddy about this cool car in the case. After listening to each of them give praise to this 'cool car', I realized that they were talking about the Edsel. Instead of going up to them and claiming that it was mine, I just walked away, quietly smiling to myself, knowing that I might have sparked someone else's imagination. Possibly giving them inspiration to do something out of the ordinary. The feeling you get from that is way better than getting a ribbon, plaque or trophy. Being noticed is one thing, but being an inspiration, that's what takes the cake! Well, that is all I have for you guys this time. Hopefully, we can all make it to the January meeting, where the theme is BOX STOCK. I'm sure that Bob will come up with a miscellaneous sub-theme for us. I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Until then, keep your knife sharp and your glue capped! Mike ************************************************* LAST MEETING'S MINUTES The only minutes from the December 2001 meeting of the the BSAC are the naming if the winners of the Model of the Year and Modeler of the Year Awards. Dave Clutter's 1970 Mustang Mach I, in Grabber Green, was voted Model of the Year for 2001. An excellent model, it certainly conveys the essence of the '70's with its high impact color. Nice work, Dave! Modeler of the Year is Mike Newport. Mike built many very cool models throughout the year and was able to take home more than a few of the coveted blue ribbons. Congratulations to Dave and Mike on work well done. The remainder of the party was spent eating, chatting, munching, bs'ing, looking at Gary's styrene stash, eating some of the meat and cheese tray, and opening gifts. Tom has added many new links in the past few months, for model related items as well as full size vehicle sites. Visit the site often and check out the message board. Every now and then someone new posts to the board. This could be a chance to meet someone new, as well as maybe get someone interested in the club. http://members.dencity.com/bsac/index.html ************************************************* EDITOR'S NOTE Maybe it's the hectic holidays, but I have nothing to comment on this month. Haven't been down to my workbench in weeks, even with extra time off from work. Guess that will make the coming winter months better for modeling. Miscellaneous theme for this month is "Whatever". Bring "whatever" you want to put on the table. See you at the meeting ************************************************* 2002 THEMES Jan - Box Stock Feb - Wagons and Woodies Mar - Cars you drove to high school (or wish you had!) How Long Have You been A Member of BSAC? About a year & a half - this time. I was also a member in 1995, but for occupation & monetary reasons, I quit coming to meetings. When Did You Start Building Models? When I was About 5 years old. What Was The First Model You Built? I think my first model was a yellow 1/32 scale snap together fire truck. But the model that I remember the most is Knight Rider 2000. I still have most of it. It's really bad! (No one ever told me that glue in a tube would create "strings" that I could get all over the model!) What is Your Favorite Model of All Time & Why? I don't really have a particular model, but more of a category - modern day street cars. I like to modify them with the "If I owned one of these..." mentality. What is Your Least Favorite Model To Build & Why? I don't really care for stock cars. To me, they are all the same car with different paint. I feel that I don't have as much "artistic license" or freedom of expression when building these type of cars. What is Your Favorite Type Of Model Car to Build & Why? I like to build Japanese model kits. They are far superior in fit, finish & detail. Most Japanese kits are curbside kits, which makes them faster to build also. What Modeling Technique Do You Feel You are Best At? I think my ability to get a really good paint job on a model has dramatically improved in the last year or two. Although Spraying & polishing are the most time consuming, it pays off in the end. What Modeling Technique Would You Rather Have A root Canal Than Do? I really hate wiring engines. I rarely do it. I feel that at 1/24 or 1/25, the engine is way too small. Don't get me wrong, a well wired engine looks awesome, I just think that the builder may have "spilled the glue" too many times! What Other Hobbies Do You Have? I like to mountain bike, I have An R/C car, I collect Hotwheels, & I like to play racing video games. If You Were In Charge, What One New Model Would You Issue? Not just one kit!!! I would like to see a lot more modern subjects, but done like the older 3-n-1's, with add-on options, like aero-skirts, wings, custom wheels & interior options, so the car could be built "stock" or "custom" as you see fit. (Revell's Acura Integra Type R Kit accomplishes this really well) As with many new kits, when you are finished, there are NO extra parts (unless you forgot something!). It's very hard to customize without scratchbuilding. What Model Would You Reissue? I would like to build many of the kits I have now before I answer that! What would you change about the club? I think the club is fine. There aren't too many people my age, but I don't mind. It's our common interest in automobiles that draws us together. I would like to see more members someday. ************************************************* COMING EVENTS... ************************************************* Sponsors: (Picture of Hobbyland logo) (Mention Hobby Heaven) ************************************************* BSAC News is published monthly for members and associate members of the Buckeye Scale Auto Club.
