Once again, I have had a super hectic month. Between overtime at work and family and friends visiting from out of town, I haven't been able to do anything model car related. Well, I take that back. I did go out to LS in Lancaster last Saturday to get a Plymouth Belvedere. I paid $8.70 for it down there. Here in town if you can find one, they are $15.59 at Hobbyland and $19.99 at Hobbytown USA! (On the shelf right next to the Plymouth was the new 1957 T-Bird for $12.00) I'm not to sure if they have been discontinued already, as Bob suggested, or if the hobby stores are having a hard time getting them. In either case, they must be "Rare", and therefore demand a higher price. (anyone who has been on EBAY knows that the word "rare" can add at least $10.00!) While on the subject, I do have a few complaints about the Belvedere. First is the chrome plated bumpers. The ends of the bumpers in my kit have an absurd amount of flash on them, which has been delightfully chromed so that there is no way to fix it that won't require a lot of work. My second complaint is with the side trim. Looking at the car from the front, the trim doesn't 'gracefully' arc down the side like it should. Instead, it has almost straight, abrupt angled joints which cause the trim to look like it's ready to fall off. (isn't that what happened anyway?) This 'jaggedness' can also be observed on the box art. The only other complaints are minor, such as an out of scale antenna, a sink mark in the front fender, and molded in door handles. The rest of the kit looks to be of decent quality and finish. The engine compartment is well detailed, as is the interior. I especially like the flame decals, which will make their way to another project. I'm looking forward to seeing the different versions that will show up on the table in November. Hopefully, I will be able to get to do some modeling (or something similar) in the near future. See you at the meeting! President Mike ************************************************* LAST MEETING'S MINUTES El Numero Presidente Newporto opened the April edition of the BSAC monthly meeting promptly late sometime around 8:10. New business included discussion regarding the 2002 BSAC donation auction. It was decided to conduct the auction during the May 2002 meeting. 100% of the proceeds of this auction benefit the treasury of the club. However, new for this auction, each member will be entitled to bring one consignment item, with the club receiving 20% of the selling price. A member may choose to sell is consignment spot to another member for a $5 donation to the club. Discussion regarding the new AMT/ERTL Ala Kart kit followed. It was noted that the decals included in the kit were not quite correct. It was also noted the Fred Cady Decals offers for sale a correct sheet. Carl Rees and Tom Dillion relayed some of the details of their road-trip to the NNL East in March. It was noted that Mike Lomaka Jr, and Deke Meidel had not received their respective awards for model and modeler of the year. As this goes back to 1997/1998, the awards a bit late. Carl agreed to handle this oversight. Winner of the “Niners” theme contest was Tom Dillion, who broght in a sharp custom ’49 Mercury (see, I told everyone he used to build!). Miscellaneous class winner was Deke Meidel for his ’41 Willys, finished in “cromatic” nailpolish. Last item of business was a request from Tom Ellifrit for assistance in vacuum forming. Please contact Tom if anyone can help. ************************************************* 2002 OFFICERS President: Mike Newport President-Elect: Tom Dillion II Treasurer: Carl Rees Secretary-Editor: Bob Mako ************************************************* BSAC WEBSITE http://bsac.topcities.com/ For those of you that still cruise the internet and happen upon unique websites that you think the membership would enjoy viewing, please pass their links on to me so I can add them to our Favorite Links page. Thanks... Tom ************************************************* KIT REVIEW Here is another new kit I couldn’t leave on the shelf at Grandview Hobbies. I believe this is the first new kit of a ’56 Chevy since the old Revell kit from many years ago. We “veteran” modelers remember that one and how “easy” it was to build. This is much better! Anyway, this kit looks like it will be a winner. It is much the same as Revell/Monogram’s ’55 Chevy convertible and the ’56 Nomad kits and in fact does share many parts. The engine, chassis and suspension are the same (though this kit does not include the chassis X member that would be found on the convertible) so all the right details are there. The body represents the 210 Del Ray and appears to match my reference pics. The molding is clean and white and mine came out of the box with no warpage (always an accomplishment these days). The chrome trim found on the real car is molded onto the body and a bit of Bare Metal Foil will help bring it out. One nice thing about the tri-year Chevies is the many color combinations available. Two-toning was popular and it will be easier with the molding already molded on. Revell even seems to have eliminated the strange looking front pan that seemed to stick out about three feet on the ’56 Nomad kit. The parts are there to build a stock Del Ray, including steel wheels and hub caps and two-piece whitewall tires. The little “bowties” found on the hub caps are represented by decals in black and white. This should be easier than painting these little details. The interior is the base vinyl version that will look good in the two tone color scheme of the real car. One nice thing about this version of the interior is that one won’t have to try to paint the plaid/splotchy pattern found on the cloth/vinyl interiors of the higher end cars. Like the other Chevy kits from Revell, the interior is built up from the floor, with separate side panels and a two piece dash. Gauges are represented by decals, which is much easier on the eyes! This kit will be a good starting point for many different versions. Street machine, stocker, dirt track car, police car – the possibilities are numerous, especially since it is not the high end Bel Air model. Bob Mako ************************************************* EDITOR'S NOTE The Same Kit Night Plymouths finally arrived on Carl Rees’ doorstep this past week. They will be handed out at the meeting and then we can all go home and start on our creations. Carl also mentioned that Uncle Bill has been hospitalized and has undergone major surgery. I’m sure I speak for everyone in wishing him best wishes for a speedy recovery. Theme for this month is the Class of 1960. This can be expanded to include any cars and trucks from the decade of the ‘60’s. Now I know we all have something that qualifies, and the table has been a bit bare lately, so lets all bring something in. Since it is May and that is Indianapolis 500 month, how about a subtheme of Indy related cars. These would include Pace Cars as well as Indy racers. Heck, if someone has some sort of memorabilia from Indy, bring that in and set it on the table. It is the “Miscellaneous” class after all. That is about it for this month. See you all at the meeting. ************************************************* 2002 THEMES May - Class of 1960 Jun - Mercs and Dueces (Saw this one in an old Scale Auto Enthusiast) Jul - Goodguys Drivers Aug - Mopars Sep - Tri-powers Oct - Vintage Race Cars Nov - Same Kit Night Elections Selection of Themes for 2003 Dec - Christmas Party ************************************************* AUCTION!!
