Another club meeting has snuck up on me and once again, I am unprepared! I guess that when you are working all the time, it's hard to keep track of all the other things that you need to do. This month I am going to host the 1st Annual Buckeye Scale Auto Club Picnic. This will happen on Sunday, August 18th. at 2:00pm. I know that some of you may be busy, but that okay, it's not mandatory. I will have hamburgers & hotdogs and all the "fixin's". If anyone is interested in brining anything, please let me know. (it seems that meat & cheese trays are a big hit!) Please RSVP me by Friday the 16th. My cell phone # is (614) 353-6504 and I always have it on. I have provided a map as well as written directions so that everyone can get to my place. >From I-270 head south on Sawmill road, past 161, Meijer, & Galyan's to >Cranston Drive. Turn right on Cranston drive and go about 3/4 mile to >Riverside Green and turn right. After The school entrance, turn right onto >Brock Street. My house is the 5th on the right, 6560 Brock Street. There is >limited parking in front of the house, but there is plenty of parking >behind my house in the school parking lot. That's all I have for now. See you at the meeting and then at the picnic! President Mike ************************************************ LAST MEETING'S MINUTES Minutes from the June 6, 2002 meeting. President Newport opened the meeting. First item of business was to establish the next meeting as June 27th because of the July 4th holiday. Beginning discussions were held regarding the Goodguys event to be held July 12th thru 14th. Gary Omen conducted a "One Man Show" with 9 different models of the Lancia Stratos. Two new members were welcomed, Dave Lamb and Jerry Hackney. Theme winner was Jerry Hackney for his '40's era Batmobile, based on the Black Force Lincoln Zephyr model. Miscellaneous theme winner was Gary Omen's Lancias Minutes from the June 27, 2002 meeting. Mike of Newport, president extraordinairre, opened what became a spirited and short meeting. Final arrangements were made for the Goodguys contest, with Carl Rees and Tom Dillion heading the effort to have things run smoothly. Tom mentioned the problems with the club website. It was determined that a solution might be to establish a more powerful site, but that would cost a annual fee of $60. A motion was passed and the membership voted in favor of the club paying the expense and maintaining the site. Tom Dillion will be the "webmaster". There was no voting for theme winners this month. ************************************************* 2002 OFFICERS President: Mike Newport President-Elect: Tom Dillion II Treasurer: Carl Rees Secretary-Editor: Bob Mako ************************************************* BSAC WEBSITE http://bsac.topcities.com/ ************************************************* KIT REVIEW I've picked up a couple of the Testors diecast kits recently and they do appear to be pretty nice. I found a '49 Mercury on the clearance shelf at Michaels (cheaper than some of the plastic kits on the shelf next to it) and couldn't resist. If you are looking to build a stock '49 Merc, this kit fits the bill nicely. It comes painted in black and the finish on mine is quite acceptable. Add Bare Metal Foil to cover the pre-painted trim and you have a nice looking body with little effort. The doors open on this model and the fit also is acceptable. The interior is molded in tan plastic and looks good with the black exterior but I think I'll try for a different look. The detail is decent and a little extra paint here and there will help the details to stand out. Engines on many diecast models are not very detailed and this one is no exception. All you get is an insert that sort of replicates a flathead. My suggestion is to just keep the hood shut and use the model as a display piece. The other diecast kit I got is the '71 Mustang Mach I kit. This is similar in execution to the Mercury. One of the knocks on this kit that I've read is the inaccurate grill, but it appears to be similar to the grill in pics I have of '71 Mach I's.. This kit comes pre-painted in yellow (not a bad color for Mach I's!) with black trim and hood stripe. Mine looks good and also has an acceptable finish. It will look fine with just the application of Bare Metal Foil. The engine in this kit is a bit more detailed and could be acceptable with a bit of painting and maybe some wiring, though I think that defeats the purpose of these quick build type kits. Not to be confused with any of the diecast models from the Mints, nor with a plastic kit that can be detailed out the wazoo, these kits do make for decent display pieces and are quick and easy to build. Some of the other models available do not look quite right but these two look pretty accurate. Bob Mako ************************************************* EDITOR'S NOTE First, my apologies for not preparing a July newsletter. With only three weeks between the June and July meetings and half of that time dedicated to r & r on the S. Carolina shore, there just wasn't enough time. The Goodguys show appeared to have gone well. There were a lot more entries in the contest than prior years (or so it seemed) and the quality of many of the models was excellent. Choosing the winners would be difficult. Many of the club's members, but especially Carl Rees, Tom Dillion and Mark Harmon, dedicated time over the weekend to making sure that the booth was manned and everything seemed to go smoothly. And, as usual, the display of the big models outside was also pretty good! Theme for this month is Mopars. I had intended to build a Charger for this month but I've run out of time, again. Never seem to have enough of it. I will bring a couple of older ones though, to help fill the table. I think everyone has at least one Mopar model so let's see 'em. Miscellaneous theme for August is.....Mopar race machines! I suppose this would normally fall under the theme, but there have been so many famous Dodge and Plymouth race cars over the years that this really could be a theme by itself. Well, this is about all I have for this month. See you all at the meeting August 1st. ************************************************* (Pic of Best of Show winner, 41 Willys) (Pic of contest display and club members) A note of appreciation from Goodguys and a contestant Hi Carl- thought you'd appreciate this....
