I have noticed a 'surge' in the amount of old plastic that is being re-issued, especially from AMT/Ertl. I have seen the A-Team Van, both Knight Rider cars, and the Hardcastle & McCormick Coyote. I have also seen a bunch of Corvettes, to commemorate the 30th anniversary (Ed. actually 50th anniversary, Mike. Time flies when you’re having fun!!) of America's sports car. There are Michael's Crafts exclusives like the '49 Merc and 49 Ford Custom. I have also seen a '59 El Camino at Wal-Mart (kinda wish I hadn't spent so much time tracking an original down!!). With all this 'new' old plastic on the shelves, I hope that everyone gets a chance to pick up a kit or two from the past! That's all I have this month. I hope to have a review on that '49 Ford Custom by next month. See you at the meeting! President Mike P.S.--> In memory of Sept. 11, I would like to have the Misc. Theme for this month be service vehicles, in honor of the brave fire fighters, police officers, and ambulance crews that serve our country proud in it's time of need. ************************************************ LAST MEETING'S MINUTES The August meeting of the Buckeye Scale Auto Club came to order August 1, 2002 at exactly 8:07:22, presided over by President Mike Newport (of the Newport family). Carl Rees and Mark Harmon provided a brief re-cap of the Goodguys event and model contest. It was determined that more assistance is needed at future shows, with members committing to manning the tables for longer periods of time. This was in light of the increase in contest entries this year. There were 107 entries, most of which were very good quality. The contest could be considered a success. Mike opened discussion regarding the club picnic/cookout, to be held August 18th, at the Newport residence. All members are invited and encouraged to attend this fun event. The club website has been spit between two servers so as to avoid further problems with losing the pages. Tom Dillion has put the message board on a separate site. This will cost the club $5 per month. The club welcomed new member Mike Selegue. Mike is the Goodguys contest winner in the dragster class two years in a row. Deke Meidel was the winner for the August theme of Mopars. As is customary of Deke, his ’64 Dodge was superbly finished, including the 6 cylinder engine it was sporting. (Photo of table of Mopars) Miscellaneous class winner was Mark Harmon’s Mooneye’s Drag team. This included the race trailer, Dodge Dually for a tow vehicle, a Dodge Avenger pro-stock and a Caravan team vehicle. Quite a unique display. AMT/ERTL has re-released the 1949 Ford Custom Coupe and is selling them exclusively at Michaels (at least for now). My guess is they are not the best sellers there as I was able to get mine for half-price, about $7, and they have been on the shelves only a short time. Opening the box reveals pretty much the same kit as earlier re-issues, though the Goodyear Eagles included for the custom version may be new. It is molded in gray plastic and, surprising for the age of the kit, mine is relatively flash free. And the glass and chrome are actually packaged separately. The custom parts are the same as has been in the kit including the optional Cadillac engine with tri-power intake setup. Guess I should have done this review last month as it would have given more ideas for this month’s theme. I have always liked this kit because of the level of detail AMT has provided and it does build into a good looking model of the ’49 Ford. The picture that comes to my mind is of a mildly customized, flathead powered, lowered car that I saw in a copy of Street Rodder magazine about 15 years ago. That one was done in a beige pearl with candy colored flames – one of these days (years?) I may even build it. ************************************************* EDITOR'S NOTE The second “annual”, once a bi-centennial BSAC picnic (the first was actually held about 8 years ago, I believe) was held at Mike Newport’s palatial estate on August 18th. There was great food, lots of bench racing and plenty of camaraderie. The only thing missing was most of the club members. While the turnout was a tad disappointing, especially since there appeared to be interest in having this event, those of us who were there truly had a good time and are looking forward to the next one. Theme for this month is “Tri-Powers”. These would be models of anything powered by “3” carbs. Anything from a ’32 Ford with a flathead and three Strombeckers to the quintessential tri-powered GTO’s. The possibilities are numerous! We will take Mike’s suggestion for the Miscellaneous theme this month. I know there are some very good public service vehicle models on some of our member’s shelves and this would be a good month to dust them off and bring them in. So, is everyone progressing on the Same Kit Night Plymouths? November is quickly approaching! In reviewing the Coming Events section, I believe I should note a probable change. I do believe the Carlisle sponsored show at the Franklin County Fairgrounds has been cancelled. I am not certain, but the last couple were so my best guess is that this show is history. However, that just means that everyone will have more $$ available for Toledo in October! ************************************************* 2002 THEMES Sep - Tri-powers Oct - Vintage Race Cars Nov - Same Kit Night Elections Selection of Themes for 2003 Dec - Christmas Party ************************************************* COMING EVENTS...
